Often, when people experience a level of distress where they are not able to process it on their own, individual therapy is helpful for exploring and working through emotional, psychological and spiritual challenges. By improving the ways in which you process your feelings and interpersonal connections, you will be more equipped to navigate some of life's relational hurdles. Trained first in the medical model of psychotherapy (diagnosis and treatment), Debra decided to shift her perspective to a systemic approach as her primary way of working with her clients. This means that while she has been trained to diagnose and treat, and will do that when needed, her approach is primarily systemic and structural. Rather than looking at what is wrong with the client, "You are depressed. Let's fix that," she looks at her client and says, "What is going on in the system you are involved with that is keeping you from being as strong and resilient as I know you can be?" It is a growth model for healing, not an 'illness' model.' During the COVID pandemic, many have experienced a type of passive or secondary depression or anxiety, simply due to being isolated from family and friends, and from being home bound. Being unable to experience 'necessary variation' in our day in and day out routines has put many people on edge. Reports of insomnia from a lack of stimulation have increased.
