Anxiety can be understood as a normal reaction to stress that can be beneficial in some situations. It alerts us to danger, helps us prepare for upcoming events, and helps us pay attention when we need to. We all experience anxiety, and trauma at some point in our lives. The more we understand it and face it head on, the more able we are to build a resilience in the face of overwhelming events. We must all learn to cultivate resilience, and in many ways, anxiety becomes our friend and teacher.
Anxiety disorders involve excessive worry or fear and are the most common of emotional disorders experienced by Americans today. Up to 40,000,000 Americans struggle with an anxiety disorder at any given time. Many types of anxiety are transient, meaning they are not permanent. In most cases, anxiety is treated and eventually overcome.
Often times, triggers for anxiety are not completely understood by the person experiencing them. In many cases, EMDR brings understanding around what is causing unwanted anxiety, and is known, in many instances, to restore the person back to a place of peace and equilibrium.
